Power Rankings: August 17 – 23
1. Yankees (78-46) – They are still beating up on the Red Sox, even in Boston. This division is theirs to lose.
2. Cardinals (72-54) - Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, DeRosa, Lugo, Molina, Carpenter, Wainwright, Smoltz, Franklin. That’s their team on paper, to me it’s the second best team on paper.
3. Angels (74-48) - Angels pitching has given up more runs than Texas has by almost 100 runs this season, but they still lead the division by 5.5 games.
4. Phillies (71-50) – Pedro thus far has proved to be far more valuable as a starter than Moyer has which could only benefit the Phils.
5. Dodgers (74-51) – Broxton just looks tired, he is definitely going to be blowing saves in September due to over usage right now.
6. Red Sox (70-53) - If you can’t even take 2 of 3 from the Yankees at home you clearly have no shot at the division, they just better hope they can beat the Rays!
7. Rockies (70-54) - Ubaldo Jimenez already has 12 wins, tying a career high with at least 5 more starts to go.
8. Rangers (69-54) – Scott Feldman has nine victories on the road this season which proves the point even more that it’s extremely difficult to pitch well in Texas.
9. Tigers (65-58) - For a team who made the best moves in the division (getting Washburn and Huff for next to nothing) they can’t seem to create any kind of distance.
10. Rays (67-56) - The Rays are doing their job by taking the last series vs. the Rangers to try and cut the wild card deficit. Upton needs to starting hitting with RISP if they want to make the playoffs.
11. Marlins (65-59) - This team is serioulsy just one piece away from being a contender for next year. They need more production from 3B and their OF to really make a dent in the NL East.
12. Giants (67-57) - Lincecum is winless in his last four starts (although he took two no-hitters into the fifth) and not because he pitched bad but because this team is failing to score runs as of late.
13. Braves (66-58) - The Braves have won 12 of their last 17 and Brian McCann is heating up just when they need him to. They are now just four games back of the Rockies for the Wild Card.
14. White Sox (63-61) – Peavy is one rehab start away from making his White Sox debut.
15. Mariners (63-61) - Russell Branyan is quietly having a career year with 30 HRs and 75 RBI.
16. Cubs (62-60) - Carlos Zambrano admitted to being the laziest human being on the planet; well not quite the planet, but still not something you want to hear from the ace of your staff.
17. Twins (61-63) - Liriano is on the DL because he sucks, not because of a tired arm because if that were the case it was tired the WHOLE DAMN SEASON!
18. Astros (61-63) - I would love to see Armando Benitez pitch this year but it’s just not going to happen. Also, Lance Berkman is too good to be on such a bad team for so long. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
19. Brewers (60-63) – It would have been an interesting race if they decided to rent Halladay and Lee for the remainder of the year…well a Brewers fan can dream, no?
20. Blue Jays (57-65) – This team isn’t even winning games that are started by Roy Halladay. No matter what anyone says they are still four-five years away from contention.
21. Mets (57-67) - They ended a game on Sunday with an unassisted triple play, that sums up the Mets last three seasons and counting.
22. Indians (54-69) - Why do teams suddenly play better when they get rid of their best players? Who knows but just ask the Indians.
23. A’s (55-68) - No, really…has “Money Ball” the movie come out yet?
24. Diamondbacks (55-70) - Mark Reynolds is battling for the HR title with Albert Pujols; who saw that coming before the season started?
25. Reds (52-71) - With Aaron Harang out for the year this team only has a chance to win every 5th day and that’s about it, so sad.
26. Orioles (51-73) - I just hope for them to beat up on the Yankees and Red Sox regardless of when they play.
27. Padres (52-74) – The Baseball Gods hate you because of your camo uniforms; therefore, you won’t win until you burn them.
28. Pirates (51-71) – Flat out terrible and they still won’t even bring up Alvarez.
29. Royals (47-76) - At one point this team was playing so well and Greinke was pitching so well people thought they would compete for the division. Wow, those people couldn’t have been any more wrong!
30. Nationals (44-80) - Let’s just hope they can sign Bryce Harper with at least 45 seconds to spare at next year’s deadline.
