NL Leaders Take Steps Toward Clinching

Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 1 – Through 6 innings, Diamondbacks SP Dan Haren was cruising along (even had a no-hitter through 4 innings) and the Rockies were in jeopardy of losing the game and the series to Arizona. Well, as good as Haren was, Rockies SP Ubaldo Jimenez was even better. The Rockies got to Haren in the 7th and 8th innings, touching him up for all five of their runs, including a two-run shot by Jason Giambi. On an off day for 1B Todd Helton, Giambi went 2-4 and improved his Rox stats to .400 BA, 2 HR, and 11 RBI in 12 games. He has been a real shot in the arm (insert steroid joke here). Now to Jimenez, he gave up only one run in 7 innings with 8 strikeouts. After throwing 122 pitches and picking up his 14th win, he is proving how valuable he is to this team. The Rockies extend their NL wild card lead to 4 ½ games.

Dodgers 6, Giants 2 – The Giants haven’t planned on fading from playoff contention, but even after getting their wild card deficit to 2 ½ games on Friday night, they are right back at 4 ½ after losing to the Dodgers on Sunday. Andre Ethier hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Giants ace Tim Lincecum in the 4th inning, and the Dodgers never looked back. LA SP Randy Wolf improved to 6-0 in his last 7 starts with 6 innings of two-run ball. As for his counterpart, Tim Lincecum, he gave up five runs in four innings, to tie his shortest start of the season. The Dodgers knocked off a game off their magic number, which is now 8, and their number for clinching a playoff spot is down to 5.

Phillies 4, Braves 2 – Who knows what the outcome of this game would have been if it wasn’t for the rainy conditions in Atlanta. Instead of a terrific pitching matchup between Cliff Lee and Tommy Hanson, the rain came into play and effected each pitcher’s day. Lee was forced to leave the game after four innings after allowing only one run, and Hanson was not comfortable on the mound while the rain was coming down. Each pitcher was out of the game after a 1 hour and 51 minute rain delay, but neither team put much of an effort into more scoring after the delay. Brad Lidge picked up his 31st save in the 9th inning, despite giving up one run and allowing the tying run to the plate. The Braves fall to 5 ½ games back in the wild card chase. The Phillies reduced their NL East magic number to 6.
