And I Quote, “Cole Hamels is an Idiot.”
If Cole Hamels is just going to go around the media and say whatever the hell he wants, well then so am I. After game 4 of the World Series in Philly, Cole Hamels said to the media according to Yahoo! Sports;
“I can’t wait for it to end (the World Series). It’s been mentally draining. At year’s end, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”
Cole, you are in the middle of the World Series, at home in Philly with a chance to repeat as back to back champions for the first time in the Majors since the Yankees themselves did it in ’99 and ’00. The Phillies lost game 4 and found themselves down 3-1 in the series and instead of their leader, their 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels trying to boost the moral of his teamates he says something stupid like that.
I understand Hamels has had a frustrating year, winning just 10 games with 11 losses and his ERA above 4.00 - but this is a fresh start! Instead, Hamels plays very poorly in the NLDS and the NLCS and instead of acting like a WS MVP and brush it off, he sulks and sucks it up in the World Series as well. If I was in the locker room when Hamels made these comments I would be pissed. With the offense the Phillies have and the pitching staff of Lee, Martinez, and Cole himself, the Phillies are never out of any series no matter what. Those types of comments are things you keep to yourself, especially in a city like Philadelphia. Everyone probably hates his guts now and if there is a game 7 and Hamels pitches the pressure is on him, and him alone.
Brett Myers confronted Hamels after yesterdays game 5 win and mockingly said, “What are you doing here? I thought you quit.”
Hamels then proceeded to curse out Myers and they had to be seperated. Kudos to Myers for stepping up and trying to be a leader. I think he should have confronted Hamels and I think a guy like Howard or Utley doing the same thing would have said a lot for this team and maybe helped swing the momentum in the Phillies way traveling back to NY to try and repeat. If the Phillies get to a game 7, I think Manuel should wise up and start JA Happ and NOT Hamels. Not as a punishment to Hamels but more so because he would be handing the 27th World Series trophy to A-Rod and the Yankees because clearly his head is not into baseball right now.
Only time will tell how the scuffle and how winning a huge game 5 will carry on to Yankee Stadium.

Dude…don’t even get me started on this guy. It all started when he flailed his arms when Utley made an error during the Dodgers series. This guys has been resting on his laurels from last season, and he has a LOT of growing up to do.
And Myers is the athlete form of the typical Phillies fan, which is why we love him. Start his ass if we make it to game 7 lol.
Haha Myers for game 7, nice. I’m glad one of the biggest Phillies fans I know is agreeing with me here that Hamels is being a bitch basically. What are we in C League at the SPJBC? Flailing his arms in the air due to an error, that’s a joke right?
Hamels did the same thing when they were playing the Yankees during interleague play. Rollins made an error and he just rolled his eyes and showed some pretty bad body language.
Davis Wells did that once when he was pitching for the Yankees and Jeter said to him, “we don’t make faces when you make a bad pitch..you don’t do that when we make a bad play.”
as far as a Game 7 pitcher…no comment
Cole Hamels is just a big baby. Plain and simple. He isn’t getting his way/isn’t at the “lights out” dominant form that he was in last year, so now he just wants the season to be over because he’s had a shitty season. Give me a break… That’s ridiculous. You’re getting paid to go out there and grind it out no matter how poorly or successfully you do. Believe me, as a pitcher, I know exactly were Cole is coming from in wanting the season to be over after having an average-to-below average season; especially since it followed the dominant year that he had in 2008. But here’s the thing cole…NEWS FLASH…YOUR TEAM IS IN THE WORLD SERIES!!! You don’t say that kind of crap when your team is still fighting to win the damn thing. If he REALLY felt it necessary to make a comment like the one that he did, he should’ve waited until the whole season was over and said something along the lines of “I’m glad the season is finally over. It’s been extremely draining on me both mentally and physically. I just want to go spend some time with my wife and our newborn son, work hard this offseason, and get a fresh start next spring.” That would be the mature thing to do… However it wasn’t and Cole has shown us his true side when he doesn’t get his way.
Now, the issue with Brett Myers shouldn’t have even been an issue. Brett Myers, in my opinion, is a nobody compared to Hamels and Cole shouldn’t have let a comment, from the guy Manuel decided to sit in the NLCS, bother him like it did. Don’t get me wrong, I believe what Myers said, needed to be said but not from him. Maybe someone like Howard or Lee or Utley because those guys are actually the leaders on the team. Need I bring up the confrontation that Brian Bruney of the New York Yankees and Francisco Rodriguez of the New York Mets had earlier this year because of Bruney running his mouth. It’s not exactly the same thing, but Bruney is NOWHERE NEAR the level of athleticism that K-Rod is. Right thing to say… Wrong person to say it.
This last thing that I’ll bring up really pisses me off about a lot of pitchers that I see today. A few in the MLB that I can think of off the top of my head are Hamels (obviously), John Lackey, and AJ Burnett. There’s usually only a handful of guys that do it in the MLB, but pitchers showing up either their fielders when they don’t make a play or the umpires when they don’t make the call that they wanted, really irks the shit out of me because it’s not helping anything. If anything, getting pissed off at these people are only going to make things worse for you in the longrun.
Umpires usually don’t take any kind of shit from anybody, and when a pitcher shows them up, you can better believe that it’s going to be a long night for that pitcher. Any ball thrown that is borderline ball-strike, will probably be called a ball from there on out. Furthermore, pitchers have NO right to flail their arms around or talk down to the fielders on the team. If an error is made, a pitcher should be determined to bear down even more and pick that teammate up and let him know that you’re there for him; JUST LIKE HE IS THERE FOR YOU WHEN YOU’RE MAKING MISTAKES!!! Position players don’t want to see their pitchers getting pissed off when they make a mistake. They know they made a mistake and the last thing a fielder wants is his pitcher letting him know that he messed up. When pitchers are getting shelled or turning the ballpark into a merry-go-round, they obviously don’t want to be hearing stuff from their fielders about what how they’re pitching. Which is why that kind of stuff isn’t right. Play the game the right way and DO YOUR JOB!!! It’s that simple. Once the pitcher releases the ball, there’s nothing he can do about who fields it or doesn’t or where the ball will go. If he is able to induce a groundball or pop up and the fielders can’t make the play, the pitcher has done all he can do.
If Manuel decides to not start Hamels the rest of the series, it’d probably be in the Phillies best interest. Not only is Hamels not having a good season, his head is in other places at the moment and if the Phillies want to have any chance of coming back to win this series, Hamels won’t be seeing the bump anytime soon.
I mentioned it in my last comment, but I’m still picking the New York Yankees winning it at Yankee Stadium in Game 6 behind Andy Pettite. Although it’s been a VERY long time since he’s thrown on 3 days rest, I believe that pitching at Yankee Stadium in the World Series clinching game will push him through this one. I expect one of the better outings that Pettite has ever had in Game 6.
