Mark McGwire Admits To Steroid Use (Including ’98)

Mark McGwire has finally broken his silence.  Since the congressional hearings in March of 2005, McGwire was harder to find than Osama BinLaden.  McGwire repeately said he didn’t want to talk about the past, but he never quite came out and said ‘no, I didn’t take steroids,’ like Roger Clemens did.  Mark McGwire is most known for being a power hitting and break Roger Maris’ HR record of 61 home runs in 1961 by hitting 70* in 1998 (Sosa hit 66*).  McGwire has 583* homers for his career and posted 6 years of 40 more!

This past offseason McGwire became the new Cardinals hitting coach and for him to transition himself from being hidden under a rock to being on the field and around a batting cage daily, McGwire NEEDED to come out and admit this as soon as possible.  It was definitely a good thing that McGwire got this off his chest for himself and himself only.  I do not respect him more for admitting to steriods, but actually less because the truth is finally out (something that everyone as baseball fans have assumed for years now).

McGwire said in a phone interview with AP today,”It’s very emotional, it’s telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it’s former teammates to try to get ahold of, you know, that I’m coming clean and being honest.  It’s the first time they’ve ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody.

Yeaaaaaaaah… you didn’t hide this from anyone McGwire; EVERYONE  knew, without actually knowing, you took steroids.  Nice try.  I don’t feel bad for you but I’m glad this clears the air that 70 homeruns was never a record, nor is 73 (Bonds) or 66 (Sosa).  So Pujols just has to hit 62 to break the real homerun record and with Holliday batting behind him that might be doable.

I wish I had never played during the steroid era,” McGwire said.

I guess McGwire just couldn’t resist for a whole decade to play baseball clean.

I understand people (including Jason) being mad at McGwire, and there is no reason that anyone has to actually like him. But if anyone thinks what he did and has done is worse than Barry Bonds, then they’re crazy. Bonds has repeatedly lied (which, as Jay said, McGwire never actually did) and Bonds has even had his trainer go into prison to avoid him having to talk. McGwire never lied, but he was a wuss in avoiding the truth. I’ll admit that as a Cards fan. But now, like everyone else who has lied, this must fade away. If A-Rod can become a hero for what he did (and by did, I mean admitting his steriod use), then McGwire can go focus on his job.

    Good luck Big Mac

This is going to get very very interesting in terms of HOF. I wonder if one or any of these guys will ever get in. What’s up with the rumor that he could pinch hit in playoffs? I swear I heard that haha.

Hahah, I was going to put that in the post Galen but decided against it. LaRussa was going to have McGwire be a “September call-up” and I put that in quotes because how can a coach be a call-up haha.

Secondly, Chris, I just blew this story up because I always hated McGwire.

G you make a good point about the hall, McGwire got more votes this year than he did last and he will be the factor and show the trend of what voters will do starting next year since he admitted it. Talk about timing, he purposely waited until after the HOF voting this year.

  • Chris said:

haha LaRussa joked about that.. its a fantasy idea.. because obviously even one year off would kill his hand eye for ONE big at bat in October haha.. but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Cards back in October!

This is the thing I really respect about McGwire though: he waited until after the HOF voting to come out. I believe he really wanted to be a coach in baseball, but he knew that window would close before the new year, so he took that job in November. Then, he knew if he came out before the HOF voting, it would look like he just wanted to get in the Hall. That is why I think he waited until after the voting to show he really just wanted to get it off his chest to tell the truth, not to simply make the Hall.

Will he get more votes next year? Yes. Will it be a lot more? No.

    I feel that.

I don’t like what McGwire OR Bonds did! They both have no respect with me. But I would like some official method of revoking their “records.” they broke baseball law, took unfair advantages & their accomplishments are not real & should not be recognized.

How can any Athletics (or Cardinals) fan not be completely pissed off about the DL time McGwire brought upon himself by putting his body at risk & taking illegal AND non-baseball-approved drugs?

The more I write about this, the more angry I am. I have a McGwire rookie card. Ugh. That thing – what value could it have? Not even sentimental value!

Buster Olney basically said he has cemented the fact that he will not be in the Hall of Fame. There is a huge core of voters who won’t vote for anyone that did steroids.

McGwire rookie card. Haha I remember when it was going for $100 give or take a few dollars. 85 topps olympic uni right?

Now what is its value? $3 ?

They need to put asteriks next to these records.

  • Jason (author) said:

Good to hear that from Onley. He shouldn’t be in the HOF and I’m glad I don’t have his rookie card haha. I totally put an asteriks next to the stats I mentioned in the post!

to be honest i really think any record that has been tainted by a steroid or PED user should have it stripped of that player. if you ask me, roger maris still holds the single season HR record and hank aaron is still the all time HR king

  • Chris said:

long live roger maris and hank aaron’s records… until pujols breaks em

  • G said:

Griffey can break ‘em! (in my dreams) :’(
