Jon Garland to the Padres

The Padres have added a new right handed pitcher to their rotation, that pitcher is Jon Garland.  Last year Garland pitched for the Diamondbacks and Dodgers and combined 11-13 with a 4.01 ERA.  Garland has never had really had great success as far as keeping batting average against, hits allowed and ERA to a minimal but he will go out there and make 33 starts a year and give you 200 innings.  Last year in 6 games with the Dodgers, Garland had a 2.72 ERA which indicates to me he may be ok pitching in the very pitcher friendly Petco Park.

The deal is a 1-year/$5.3 million deal for the Padres.  The impact of this signing won’t really be significant at all, but it may prevent the Padres from being in the 70 win basement of baseball next season… but I doubt it.

Grade for the Padres: B-.  Garland will be that innings eater that they could definitely use now that Peavy is gone.  Garland gives up a lot of runs but he usually gets decent run support and if he can somehow get the Padres to score for him I could see him winning 13-15 games.
