Ozzie Less Threatened by Twins in Their New Stadium
Time and time again Ozzie Guillen puts his foot in his mouth. This weekend was no exception.
For those of you who don’t know, the Minnesota Twins will be moving out of the Metrodome this coming season to play in an outdoor stadium (Target Field). There was a special advantage in the ‘Homerdome’ that was truly not duplicated anywhere else. The sound was louder than any other field, the turf was so hard that it allowed them to build teams around speed, and the roof was white (try catching a white baseball in that!).
You’re probably wondering how this has anything to do with Ozzie and his Sox. Well, the White Sox and the Twins are pretty big rivals as of the moment and even duked it out in a 163rd game last October. Oh yeah, and those advantages, they didn’t really work well for Chicago – including that awesome one-game playoff.
Guillen sees this move as a drastic change in the image of the Twins team (despite the roster not really changing at all). Guillen specifically said, “They’re going to go from piranhas to sardines. A prediction is a prediction.”
OUCH! So basically Ozzie is saying the Twins were ONLY good because they played in the Metrodome. But then again, he is definitely excited that their biggest rival will now be playing in an open-air stadium.
He did go on to give the Twins credit for competing despite a pretty weak roster: “The thing about them, they find a way to stay where they are [atop the AL Central]. How they do it, I don’t know. They find a player from the Mexican League and all of a sudden they come play for the Twins and they’re unbelievable. They find a way to make the players play well . . . and they’re going to compete.”
Oh brother, why is Ozzie always so specific in his explanations (in reference to a Mexican League player)? It’s good to see he gives the Twins props though, because they really do deserve it. I know Jason is certainly proud of his Twinkies.

I’m sure the Twins will be fine in the move. It will certainly be a big change in terms of watching games, but they will find a niche in this stadium as they did in the dome. Actually, in recent history, teams struggled in their first few months in a new stadium until they figure out the quirks and stuff. This is probably because it is new to the home team and the opponents, which puts them on an equal level.
So is Ozzie wrong here? Nope. He is right, the advantage is gone as of the moment. But did he possibly inspire the Twins to play a little extra harder against the White Sox? I’m going to go with yes on this one.

First I’d like to start off by saying Guillen is a fool. Every time he opens his mouth something bad happens for his team so I don’t mind when he talks smack about the Twins, especially before Spring Training. Maybe the Twins will win the division by 8 games this year due to his jinxing.
Secondly, I somewhat agree with Guillen. I’m sad to see the Homerdome go. The Twins had such a home field advantage with it and I would have loved to see a new dome built instead of open air (especially in Minnesota).
As pathetic as it is, I am really torn about the situation. I don’t want to agree with Guillen but until I see the Twins play just as well in Target Field as they did in the Metrodome then I do feel it’s a less threatening place.
I think the new home field advantage will get away teams getting used to the cold in the early months of the season while the Twins will already be used to it. The Twins were so banged up last year, if healthy this year they are expected to win the Central yet again.
Bring it on Ozzie.
How can you play in Minnesota without a dome??? I’m just asking.
