News and Rumors: Upton Signs Extension, Cabrera Quits Drinking and MORE!

The Diamondbacks have announced today that they have reached an agreement with Justin Upton on a six-year extension reportely worth $51.25 millon. Good for the Diamondbacks locking up what looks to be a player headed for superstardom. Justin is the younger brother of BJ (who plays for the Rays) but has enjoyed more success (in the regular season) than his brother thus far. Upton is just 21 and last year hit .300-.366-.532 with 24 HR and 86 RBI. The D-backs now have a centerpiece to build around for the future.
The First Step Is Admitting Your Problems
Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers claims he quit drinking and was never an alcoholic. Nothing like perfect timing, unfortunately his teammates probably wish that he quit before his teams most pivitol game against the Twins last year before the Tigers choked their way OUT of the playoffs. Cabrera goes on to say:
“You guys write in the paper ‘alcoholic,’ that’s not right. I don’t know how to explain, but it’s not an alcohol problem.”
Miguel, the first step is admitting it.
The A’s are making moves this off season with the addition of Sheets and Kouzmanoff and now Brett Tomko and Jason Jennings! That’s right, the A’s signed Tomko and Jennings to Minor League deals. I don’t believe either will crack the starting rotation and right now the A’s have about 7 starters on the depth chart. I do believer however, that Jennings and Tomko could be useful in the bullpen as long relieft consider both of them were starters for much of their careers. Jennings is 62-74 in 225 games (180 starts) with a 4.94 ERA and Tomko, whom I believe will be of more value, is 100-102 with a 4.65 ERA in 389 games (225 starts).
- Royals signed former No. 1 overall pick Luke Hochevar to a 1-year/$1.76 million deal. If Hochevar pitches in the Minors he will make just over $700,000. Last year he was 7-13 with a 6.55 ERA. This year, the Minors seems likely yet again.
- Adrian Gonzalez is seeking a Mark Teixeira like deal which for Teixeira was 8-years/$180 million. Good luck finding a suitor for that Mr. Gonzalez. The only team willing to do that has a 1st basemen already and he is locked up for the next 7 years.
- Kevin Millar was with the 2004 Red Sox who won the World Series snapping an 86-year curse. He is now with the Cubs for the 2010 season and he plans on breaking their curse as well. We’ll see.
I’m not saying the Cubs won’t break the curse this year (actually I am, I just don’t want to jinx it), but if they do, it certainly won’t be because of Kevin Millar.
I second that notion but it’s nice that he feels important, haha.
