Lester One Hits Rays, Phillies Shut Out By Mets, Rangers Extend Lead
Red Sox 2, Rays 0
The Rays have lost two straight games at home vs. the Red Sox this week and isn’t hasn’t been because of a lack of pitching yet a lack of hitting. The Rays managed 1 hit tonight against Jon Lester who is 5-0 in his last 6 and truely emerging as this team’s ace. For the best team in baseball, 32-14, I feel like the Rays have been 1 hit in 6 of their 14 losses. That’s obviously not the case but when they get shut out they literally get shut down.
David Ortiz had two RBI for the Sox after doubling off of Shields in the 3rd inning. Slowly but surely David Ortiz has hit the gas petal. He has 8 home runs and 21 RBI in the month of May and raised his averaged to .258. Granted the Rays have taken 2 of 2 thus far on the road to the Rays but the Rays are still the far superior team that is just on a bad streak. I don’t see a sweep coming with Matt Garza on the mound for the Rays tomorrow.
Pirates 2, Reds 1
That’s right, here at MLBtoday.net we even highlight Pirates games… This game actually happened to be a very well pitched game featuring Pat Maholm of the Pirates and rookie starter Mike Leake for the Reds. Maholm surrendered no runs to the first place (at the time) Reds and Leake gave up just one run in 7.1 IP. The game came down the the bullpens and after Joel Hanrahan gave up a game typing home run to Brandon Phillips in the 8th to blow the save the Pirates came back to score a run in the 9th off of Nick Masset (who happens to have an ERA above 7, like we didn’t see this one coming).
With the way the Cardinals are playing and the surprise of the Reds pitching they have a legitamate shot to win the division… except when you lose 2-1 home games vs. the Pirates. The Reds definitely need another piece in the bullpen to solidify their team to make a run at the playoffs.
Mets 8, Phillies 0
I didn’t see this one coming, especially with former Twin great R.A. Dickey on the mound but nonetheless the Mets took it to Jamie Moyer scoring one run in 5 of the first 6 innings. The Mets were led by two RBI from Bay and two from Francoeur but as I mentioned the real story was R.A. Dickey. He worked 6 scoreless and struck out 7 so you know the knuckler was dancing tonight! Mets pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts in the game and the Phillies struck out, well ZERO batters for the game. With the win the Mets are now a .500 team and are just 4 games behind the Phillies in a very tight NL East. The Mets are playing well again after taking 2 of 3 vs. the Yankees are this is yet another statement series for Manuel and the Mets.
Rangers 8, Royals 7
Lots of runs and lots of bad pitching. The Rangers beat a garbage team and extended their lead in the most garbage divison in baseball to 3 games. I figured I’d just point that out to everyone reading.
