Bad News for Twins: Tear in Nathan’s Right Elbow

Twins All-Star closer Joe Nathan has a torn ligament in his right elbow.  Nathan felt soreness and discomfort after facing just three batters against the Red Sox (including 2 walks).  Obviously any tear of any ligament is a huge deal but this one unfortunately is the ulnur collateral ligament, you know the one that would require Tommy John surgery!
The 35 year old is going to rest for two weeks in an effort to try and build his strength back up.  If this is not successful, Nathan will have to undergo Tommy …

Spring Training Report: Zito Unhappy, Dodgers Lose Martin, Soto Sheds Some Weight

With the season practically around the corner players are reporting to camp in better shape than last year for those who slumped while many others are trying to prove their worth and build upon a good 2009 season for themselves.

Barry Zito is all over the news thus far this Spring.  Just the other day he hit Prince Fielder and a week before that he said that he wants to be the ace of the Giants staff… and he wasn’t joking!  Sorry Barry, but maybe you forgot this guy Tim Lincecum, …

Spring Training Report: Pitchers Feeling the Pain, Returning from Injury, and their New Digs

After the first week of spring training, we already have some ‘injuries’ or at least issues to monitor on some pitchers as the season approaches. Hopefully these things will clear up sooner than later, but I wouldn’t worry yet since its still verrrryyyy early.

Down in Arizona, Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb says he felt ‘stagnant’ in his latest bullpen session and is becoming impatient with his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery last season. He only threw in one game, opening day and he missed the rest of the season. It’s unclear whether …

Spring Training Report: A-Rod, Hamilton, Cliffy Baby…Among Others

Spring training is underway in Florida and Arizona, so there’s plenty to report out of each teams’ camps. Here are few of the headlines from the first week out of the warmer states with baseball greats!
A-Rod Reflects on Last Year
Around this time last year, Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez was crying and apologizing for his steroid use from ‘earlier’ in his career. Lucky for him, that media coverage faded away due to his hip injury that kept him out til May. Then, when the postseason came, he ‘redeemed’ himself with a …

Damon Finally Finds a Spot – in Detroit, Delgado Opts for Surgery, Mets Find Starting Catcher

It’s been a long offseason for Johnny Damon, one that he likely won’t want to go through again.
The Detroit Tigers and Johnny Damon reached an agreement on a one-year/$8 million deal on Saturday to end the saga of Damon’s new team. Nearly a month ago, the Yankees called Damon’s bluff and signed Randy Winn to play outfield to replace Damon. That left Johnny and his agent Scott Boras questioning Damon’s worth on the market and whether the 36-year-old was going to find a home worth his liking (money-wise that is).
The …

Frank Thomas OFFICIALLY Calling It Quits

Although Frank Thomas hasn’t play a game since 2008 with Oakland, he wasn’t officially retired until now.  Thomas will hold a press conference at US Cellular Field today to make the official statement.  Thomas, aka The Big Hurt, spent 16 years of his 19 year career with the White Sox.  In the 90’s The Big Hurt was arguably the most dominant hitter in baseball and without a doubt the most intimidating, standing at 6′5″ 275 pounds.
From 1991-1999 Thomas averaged 32 HRs and 112 RBI a season.  In that same time …

Lincecum Reaches Deal with San Fran

Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants reached a contract agreement that is worth $23 million over the next two seasons.  Lincecum will receive a $2 million signing bonus and be paid $8 million for the 2010
season.  His salary will be raised to $13 million in 2011.  He also can get money for performance and award bonuses.  This is a large pay raise for the back to back NL Cy Young Award winner.  The 25 year old made just $650,000 last season.  He is eligible for free agency after the …

Wang Chooses the Nationals

For Chien-Ming Wang to go from elite status (Yankees) to the bottom of the barrel in baseball (Nationals) you know he must be desperate for a job.  The Nationals signed Wang to an undisclosed amount as of now and he will join the rotation in May in all likelyhood.  Wang was a 19 game winning in 2006 and 2007 but struggled to stay healthy in 2008 and 2009.  Wang is already 29 years old after playing professionally overseas for a few seasons.  His injuries weren’t minor aches and pains, he …

Monster Extension for Verlander, Plus Many More Moves (and 1 Surprise)

The Detroit Tigers and ace supreme Justin Verlander have agreed to a 5-year/$80 million deal that avoids arbitration and prevents the all-star pitcher from becoming a free agent in two years. The Tigers are wise to make this move now, because Verlander would without a doubt earn at least $100 million if he wasn’t locked up within the next two years. This is one heck of a contract extension.
For Verlander, this deal allows him to not have to worry about trade rumors and free agency for at least four years. …

FINALLY! The Twins Add Much Needed Second Baseman

Minnesota has signed Orlando Hudson to a 1-year/$5 million deal.  Honestly, I thought Hudson to the Nationals was a done deal but he wanted $9 million per and the Nationals basically insulted him by offering $3 million.   I guess Hudson realized he wasn’t going to get $9 million and rather try to win, make the playoffs and hopefully a World Series title; he has a good shot with the Twins who desperately needed a second basemen.  I couldn’t be happier.  The Twins have finally accomplished something in the off season …
