Pujols Powers 3 Pops, Scherzer K’s 14 of 17, and SO Much More!

Another wild day of MLB action on Sunday (sorry, no perfect games today though). Let’s jump right into it!
Cardinals 9, Cubs 1

As a Cardinals fan, I’ve been spoiled over the last 10 years. I’ve been allowed to watch the best player in baseball day in and day out with incredible consistency. Albert Pujols is nicknamed ‘The Machine’ for good reason, but this year has been a little different. It’s not that Albert is bad – I would never, ever say that. But things just don’t feel the same in St. …

Cards BEAT Cubs, Reds Offense Continues Raking, Things Back to Normal in NL East

Cardinals 7, Cubs 1

As I write this game wrap-up on the early game of the day, the Cards and Cubs, I’m wearing my ‘BEAT THE CUBS’ t-shirt that I picked up in St. Louis last year. I am wearing it proudly tonight following a great beginning to the Midwest’s best rivalry. The Cardinals started the game off with six straight hits, chasing Cubs SP Randy Wells out of the game in only 16 pitches. Cripes! The Cards led 5-0 before the Cubs even hit and the game was essentially over …

Rays Rebound, Phils Shut Out Again, Royals Beat Sox

Rays 5, White Sox 1
Well I was wrong about the Rays not getting swept by the Red Sox but they did have an impressive win over the White Sox with a strong pitching performance from Jeff Niemann (shout out to Rice).  Niemann is now 5-0 on the season and has a 2.37 ERA.  The Rays offense was back at it again and featured a 2-RBI game from Crawford and Blalock.  Longoria also added an RBI giving him 39 on the season.  Longoria is going to be a great player for …

Mariners Rally Off Tigers Late, Chi Sox Win Despite Buerhle Ejection, Yankees Win 2 Games In 1 Day

Mariners 5, Tigers 4
Jeremy Bonderman controlled the first 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run which was unearned.  As soon as he came out, the M’s offense broke through against Ryan Perry. Perry only managed to get 1 out while giving up 4 runs.  While we’re on the Mariners, their big offseason acqusition Chone Figgins is now batting .193 despite being a .287 hitter.  The Mariners seem to make the worst offseason moves every year.  They’re terribly overdue for some monster free agent signings next winter that will actually …

Lester One Hits Rays, Phillies Shut Out By Mets, Rangers Extend Lead

Red Sox 2, Rays 0
The Rays have lost two straight games at home vs. the Red Sox this week and isn’t hasn’t been because of a lack of pitching yet a lack of hitting.  The Rays managed 1 hit tonight against Jon Lester who is 5-0 in his last 6 and truely emerging as this team’s ace.  For the best team in baseball, 32-14, I feel like the Rays have been 1 hit in 6 of their 14 losses.  That’s obviously not the case but when they get shut out …

Twins Deny Brewers Great Comeback, Dice-K Flirts with No-No, Morgan Practically a Moron

Twins 8, Brewers 7 (12 innings)
The game of the day was most definitely in Minnesota, and what a wild game it was!
Up 6-2 going into the ninth inning, the Twins failed to hold on to the lead, and they even lost it. The Brewers put together a very impressive rally to take the lead on the road, despite all of their recent on-field troubles. But you know what, their on-field troubles continued, because they lost that lead immediately in the bottom of the inning as the Twins forced extra innings. …

Braves Score 7 in 9th to Win, Rays Take 2 in NY, Ubaldo Throws Gem

Braves 10, Reds 9
The Braves were down 9-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, but a 7 run inning that ended with a Brooks Conrad walkoff grand slam gave Atlanta the win.  Conrad was pinch hitting and the ball actually hit LF Laynce Nix’s glove before going over the wall.  This is by far the best comeback in baseball this year and one of the best I can remember.  It’s rare seeing teams score 7 runs in any inning, but when it’s scored in the bottom of the ninth, …

Heyward Powers Walkoff, Rays Make Statement, Hanley ‘Apologizes’ and Returns

Braves 5, Reds 4
Heading into the ninth, the Reds trailed 4-3. At that point, I knew they were going to tie the game. I just knew it. They have 10 wins in their “final at-bat” (in quotes because it’s impossible to have a final at-bat on the road, but they count that), which leads the majors. Then I saw Billy Wagner in the game, and I KNEW the Reds would tie it.
Sure enough, they tied it on a pinch-hit leadoff homer from Chris Heisey (who?). Lucky for the Braves, Jason …

Reds Battle Back in 9th, Phillies Waste Halladay’s Complete Game, Ramirez-less Marlins Shutout D’Backs

Reds 5, Brewers 4
The Cincinnati Reds continue to win. This time they did it off future HOF closer Trevor Hoffman.  Scott Rolen hit a pinch-hit, 2-run homer in the 9th to tie it and Joey Votto singled off the wall it end it.  The Reds live to see another day in first place.  I really can’t tell if the Reds are for real this year.  Yes, they did just win 2 of 3 over the Cardinals this past weekend, but I just think the Cards are in a slump and …

Walkoff Mania!

Yankees 11, Red Sox 9
I hate both of the teams featured in this game, no surprise but the two big names leading to the walkoff I hate even more.  Jonathan Papelbon has actually pitched a lot better this year than last but last night was a bad bad night for him.  He blew his first save of the year when the Redsox had a 9-7 and he gave up a 2-run HR to A-Rod no less.  Those are the two guys in baseball I have more than a tough time …
