Cardinals Corner
July 31: Trade rumors out of St. Louis – Westbrook to the Cards and Ludwick to the Padres? We’ll see…
July 30: After a two-hour rain delay, the Cards won a 10-inning game against the Pirates. The only time either team really threatened to score was on the final play of the game. Sorry Carp, another non-win.

July 29: Typical Thursday afternoon game. Cards don’t hit, they lose. Nothing else to add.
July 28: Six runs in the first off Johan Santana – GREAT! They lost the lead and had to win in the 13th inning. NOT NEARLY AS GREAT!
July 27: This is the reason I will not go to a Mets/Cardinals game in NY again. Adam Wainwright, who has been nasty, lost to the Mets almost with ease. Unreal.
July 26: Ok, sorry for being pessimistic. But who can blame me? The Cards won it in 11 innings last night and get to enjoy a day off in New York. Please win 2 of 3 against the Mets!
July 25: It’s the 10th inning and the Cubs are threatening. The way the game is going there is no way the Cardinals can win. I’m going to assume they lose, and since there is no game tomorrow I will update you on the outcome then.
July 24: Another game without one of their top three pitchers on the mound, another game the Cards lose. I’m hoping that Carp can salvage the final game of the series before the team moves on to Citi Field.
July 23: The last few years, the Cardinals played well in the Friday day game opener in Chicago. However, since Jeff Suppan was on the mound, and the offense didn’t show up again, the Cards lost.
July 22: I couldn’t say I didn’t call this one. My dad and I both knew the Cards would lose 1-0 with Wainwright on the mound on a Thursday afternoon. Only thing was, we didn’t think it was going to be an 11-inning one-hit game. End of the 8-game win streak, sigh.
July 21: Maybe we’re on to something here…? It’s eight straight wins for boys wearing the birds on the bat.
July 20: It was a Chris Carpenter vintage night at the ballpark. I may not trust him as much as Waino, but I can’t help but wait for more of these kinds of outings.
July 19: I fell asleep in the fourth inning of this game with the Cards down 4-2. I woke up from my mini-nap and they hit three homers in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.
July 18: Tony LaRussa did everything he could to let the Cardinals lose this game, based on the lineup he put out there. He lucked out though, since the Cards were able to piece a comeback together with five runs in the final two innings. Walk off by Matt Holliday!
July 17: Adam Wainwright is the absolute man! In 10 home starts this season, Waino is 10-0 with an ERA under 1.50. NICE!
July 16: The Cards are out with a vengence this second half. Could this be the start of something really good?
July 15: This is the kind of game that I could only hope for after the break. Carp came out and used the heat of the St. Louis night to will him through the game.
July 14: It’s the saddest day of the year for sports. No games from any of the major sports, including baseball – the best of all. Enjoy your day off everyone (fans included).
July 13: Not much Cardinals highlights from the All-Star Game in Anaheim. Pujols was 0-2, Molina and Holliday each had a single, and Wainwright pitched out of a jam. NL gets homefield after the 3-1 win – hmmmm…
July 12: Didn’t see the Home Run Derby, but I was happy to note that Matt Holliday ended his night in the first round. No need to mess up that swing, boy!
July 11: Ok, after today’s game, I am convinced that Matt Holliday should now be an all-star. Cards go into the break down 1 game to the Reds. Second half should be interesting.
July 10: Jeff Suppan will not get a win this year at this rate. They don’t hit in his starts, which aren’t exactly spectacular in the first place.
July 9: So the Cardinals were up 8-0 in the ninth inning and I still wasn’t confident that they’d win. You know something is wrong then. But they did win, thanks to the stopper – Adam Wainwright.
July 8: Figures the Cards would get owned by Ubaldo Jimenez with Carp on the mound. I’ve seen that too many times, but at least they get to leave Colorado.
July 7: Just another completely miserable game in Denver. I had zero confidence holding a lead.
July 6: I went to bed and the Cardinals were up 9-2 and coasting in the 7th inning. When I woke up, they had lost 12-9 after a nine run 9th inning. Guess how I felt…
July 5: I wish the Cards were playing today. I’m off of work and I really wouldn’t mind watching some baseball.
July 4: Happy 4th of July and happy win day for the Cardinals! Wainwright is 9-0 at home, in exactly 9 starts!
July 3: Just a bad, bad game. Chris Carpenter was incredibly UN-sharp and that will just end any chance of winning.
July 2: Nice little start by Jaime Garcia. His ERA is only 2.10!!
July 1: If Blake Hawksworth is only going to give up three runs, then the team has to come out and score runs. No excuses – not even if Randy Wolf starts (who is Cy Young against them).
June 30: Can the Cardinals ever win a day game on a Wednesday or Thursday? No. But not even at home? Nope again.
June 29: It’s nice to see the Cards win a game 8-0 since they have so many hard fought wins this year. Is the offense clicking?
June 28: I truly had a feeling the Cards would come back in the ninth inning despite being down two runs to the D’Backs. But actually it came on two HUGE errors. A win is a win though – so I don’t feel any remorse for Arizona.
June 27: I certainly hope Royals came out to play in this series because of the ‘rivalry’ they have with the Cards, because losing 2 of 3 is pretty embarrassing otherwise.
June 26: The emergency starter Blake Hawksworth picks up the W following a couple big homers from Colby and Skip. That stops the losing streak, thank goodness.
June 25: It’s my birthday, so what more could I expect than a loss? Well, Jeff Suppan versus Zack Greinke isn’t much of a matchup, so at least the loss was justified.
June 24: Typical let down game. Then again, Waino wasn’t very good, so at least the hitters didn’t keep the game close enough to still lose. That made no sense to anyone but me.
June 23: Chris Carpenter dazzles against his old team and Matt Holliday gives him the win with a clutch hit in the ninth. Good thing they didn’t blow it for Carp.
June 22: No! An off day couldn’t cool Matt Holliday off! He homered yet again, and Jamie Garcia wins, yet again!
June 21: Could an off day make Matt Holliday cool off?
June 20: Matt Holliday is OFFICIALLY heating up after two homers on Sunday. However, the Cards couldn’t muster much other offense so they lost.
June 19: Ok Matt Holliday is heating up. He had three RBIs including another homer as the Cards held on for the close win. Who knew Jason Motte could save the day?!
June 18: I think Matt Holliday is heating up. He hit a line drive to center, which I hadn’t seen since last summer.
June 17: The day off has let the Cards go with a four man rotation. I do like this since they have three of the best starters in the NL within those four.
June 16: Set back for the offense. A wasted start from Jamie Garcia, who is really good by the way. Right now, he’s one of the difference makers on the team.
June 15: Jeff Suppan is back in red and he did well in his four innings. Would have been nice to see him get a win with a fifth inning, but he’ll take it I’m sure.
June 14: Finally the bats wake up for Adam Wainwright!
June 13: Why bother coming back with three runs in the ninth if you will give up a walkoff homer? I knew if they didn’t take the lead, they have no chance to win. Ugh.
June 12: Ok, the Cards need to do something with the usage of guys I’ve never heard of starting. At least they were facing Dan Haren, who obviously tries to murder his old team every time he faces them.
June 11: Back in the W column thanks to terrible D’Backs hitting and rare Brendan Ryan hitting (and homer?!).
June 10: All year it seems like off days have come at the perfect time for this team. Well, this one had to be the most important.
June 9: Another one-run loss? Are you kidding me? Back to the drawing board offense.
June 8: An embarassing 1-0 loss hurts, but it hurts more when you have a Cy Young candidate taking the loss.
June 7: I saw this loss coming from a mile away. Blake Hawksworth spot starting against a guy they’ve never faced before. Hence the 12-4 loss.
June 6: They really should have won this game against the Brewers. The offense may be scoring a bit more, but still too many men left on base.
June 5: Yes, the Cards were up 4-1 after one inning. Yes, they blew it later in the game. But YES, they win it on Colby Rasmus clutch hit. I truly had a feeling he’d get that hit in the 11th inning.
June 4: Run support for Adam Wainwright = an easy win. I love it, but I’m sure he loves it even more.
June 3: A day off is much needed, despite the good play of late. The Cards are tied for first, but they have two less than stellar starters in their current rotation due to injuries.
June 2: Everytime Chris Carpenter stands on the mound I pray for a 4-1 win.
June 1: What do you say when your team makes two huge comebacks and still loses? Bad loss, that’s what you say.
May 31: It really is a good feeling when your team wins on a holiday. I’m really not sure why… Either way, glad to see the bats have woken up against teams the Cards must beat.
May 30: ALBERT PUJOLS! 3 HR GAME! LET’S GO!! Best part of it all – it came against the Cubs – AT Wrigley Field!
May 29: Considering a pitcher made his debut for the Cards in this game, I had no expectations (luckily).
May 28: Before the team could even settle into Chicago, they beat the Cubs 7-1 with a five-run first inning. When the Cards beat the Cubs, I feel really good. But when the Cards embarass the Cubs, I feel great!
May 27: The offense broke out! Don’t ask me how, but when Brendan Ryan get four hits, you know things were going right!
May 26: 2-1 loss in 13 innings. No comment.
May 25: The most embarassing thing in sports is to lose 1-0 in a major league baseball game. Adam Wainwright should be demanding a trade at this point.
May 24: A much needed off day with the pitching staff in shambles, but a tough series in San Diego is next.
May 23: I’ll admit that as I watched this game from being down 5-3, I didn’t give the Cards much of a shot to come back. How about changing that idea from popping into my head?
May 22: It’s games like these that make me think Albert Pujols will walk when he’s a free agent. Kyle Lohse absolutely sucks. His last start was luck, it’s official.
May 21: Cards win in an American League syle 9-5 win over the AL’s LA Angels. Brad Penny’s grand slam is the difference! (But he got hurt too…)
May 20: Thank you Mr. Wainwright, and thank you even more to the Braves! A 7-run ninth inning allows the Cards to slip back into first. Now for interleague play, and the Angels..?
May 19: Another awful game with a chance to go back into first place. This offense is wasted right now.
May 18: After Brendan Ryan gets picked off, Luddy hits a BOMB to left to take the lead. Man, that wouldn’t have sat well otherwise.
May 17: Kyle Lohse FINALLY gets his first win of the year. Too bad the Reds keep winning.
May 16: Cards are out of first for the first time since July 31 of last season. Please don’t let this feeling linger and pick it up Redbirds.
May 15: Ending the game on a play at the plate is exciting, but not when you already knew your guy would be out before it even happened. Why Jose Oquendo waved Skip Schumaker home is beyond me…
May 14: The Cards somehow win a game, thanks to Pujols and Luddy hitting homers. Jamie Garcia pitched another good game. Gotta keep winning against the Reds!
May 13: Cards swept, not much more to say. They played by far their worse series of the year and it came at home against the worst team in the NL.
May 12: Another bad game overall, and another bad fielding game by Brendan Ryan. I’m puzzled by this… And does it have to be against the worst team in the NL?
May 11: A very big error by the sure-handed Brendan Ryan opened the door to a huge inning for Houston. Not a good game…
May 10: A much needed off day for a team that has played practically the last 20 days. Now back home to beat the Astros.
May 9: Mother’s Day win for the Cards after they finally get Waino some run support. They hit around twice which I’ll take as a good thing, even against the Pirates.
May 8: I really thought that the Cards would hit Jeff Karstens, but as usual, if they haven’t faced a pitcher before, it usually means they get their butt kicked.
May 7: Cards get lucky in a crazy game, but they also blow a win for Carp. I’ll take it since they were able to end their three-game losing streak.
May 6: See May 5…
May 5: I know it sounds crazy, but Brad Penny had no-hit stuff. You know what else had no-hit stuff? The Cardinals offense. Now they get to lose to Roy Halladay too.
May 4: Wasted start from Adam Wainwright, that’s two this year. And boy do I hate walkoff homeruns, especially from catchers.
May 3: All I want from this four game series against the Phillies is two games. That might be asking too much, but after taking game one, I want more!!
May 2: Chris Carpenter had one of his vintage games which makes me rest easy. The starting pitching has been tremendous of late!
May 1: I like seeing Kyle Lohse pitch well, but blowing the lead to have him lose his win must have hurt. Keep pitching like that though, and you’ll have plenty of wins.
April 30: Too many men left on base. That’s all I have to say about this game.
April 29: A four-game sweep for the Cards over the Braves! And they won a day game on a Thursday! And Pujols didn’t even have to play!
April 28: The best thing you can have after two come from behind wins is a 6-0 win. Jamie Garcia will come back down to earth eventually, but I think he may be the real deal!
April 27: I am thoroughly impressed with the last two wins against Atlanta. They were able to come from behind in both games so far, chipping away against good pitchers. Man, I wish they could have done this against San Fran over the weekend!
April 26: Terrific come from behind win! I was wondering if the bullpen would blow such a great comeback, but I was wrong! (But still, Dennys Reyes should not be facing more than 3 batters ever.)
April 25: Thank goodness for Brad Penny, who was worth every Penny. On the same note, thank goodness for Dave Duncan. Looks like he’s done it again!
April 24: Another crappy game by the Cards offense. Such a shame to waste such a great start by our bulldog Adam Wainwright. I said it before the series though, just win one against the Giants. Well, that leaves just Sunday now…
April 23: Cards lose to Lincecum. Shocker. They actually had a chance to win if they didn’t play bad defense and their offense had better at bats with men on. Suprise?
April 22: Having missed all of the last three games, today’s day off will give me an opportunity to catch up on current Cardinals events! They’ve now won all 5 series this year!
April 21: No win for Carp, but 5 runs in a tied ninth inning sounds good to me!
April 20: Didn’t get to watch any of this game too, but I know that Lohse sucked, despite two homers from Luddy and one from Albert. That’s a let down in my book.
April 19: Didn’t get to watch the game, but I wish I did. After a shaky first, Penny settled down. And Matt Holliday may be feeling better after that blast of a homer. The Cards have won the opener in each series!
April 18: Thank goodness they won on Sunday. Thank goodness for Adam Wainwright. He is a savior, and as I said yesterday, that’s why you go for the win in the 20-inning game – because you have a gamer the next night.
April 17: I am so annoyed at Tony LaRussa for giving up early on in this 20 inning loss.. I wrote a whole post on it. This was a game that I will remember forever, for all of the wrong reasons.
April 16: Felipe Lopez’s grand slam was one of those moments that you remember for years – because it came against the Mets! BOOYAH!
April 15: Honestly, I would have rather faced Roy Oswalt than Bud Norris. This guy kills the Cards. Then again, they never win on a Thursday afternoon, ever. So it wouldn’t have mattered.
April 14: I was uncomfortable this entire game, but luckily the Cards were playing the Astros, so insurance was not necessary in a 2-1 win. Now get that sweep on Thursday!
April 13: It’s only the second week of the season and the Cards have had two off days after a win. I’d like to build some momentum here!
April 12: Nothing like an easy home opener. Pujols homers for 5th time in 7 games and Wainwright continues what he did last year.
April 11: I’m mad the Cardinals even bothered coming back. Though it’s good to see Pujols and Holliday hitting in the clutch of course. Hey, 2 of 3 on the road is good any time.
April 10: Great game by Jamie Garcia in his second career start. Beating Gallardo is is impressive whether he was on or not. Plus Yadi and Colby homered, booyah!
April 9: I wasn’t able to watch tonight’s game, but my cousin Dave texted me to tell me that Nick Stavinoha hit a ninth inning 2-run homer to put the Cards over the Brew Crew. Let’s gooo!
April 8: True story – Cardinals give up walkoff homer and within 10 seconds, someone from work comes to my desk and says, “Chris, I need your help. Aren’t you happy to help me?” And that is why April 9 is my last day at that job.
April 7: Pujols drives in lead run and Luddy makes two great catches in 9th inning to keep the Cards in line. 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006. They won the WS that year – let’s goo!
April 6: Having a day off after an awesome game better not have the Cards lose momentum…
April 5: Four hits and two homers from Albert, homer and robbed homer by Rasmus, and a grand slam by Yadi… what more could I ask for on Opening Day??!! =)
April 4: I’m super pumped for baseball tomorrow, but why must the Cardinals be playing at 1pm when I have work?!? I’m going to have to sneak a peak at some point!
April 2: My boys went into Target Field and put a hurtin’ on the Jason’s Twins. Luckily they don’t play this year – lucky for the Twins that is. Matt Holliday homered and drove in more on a double. Can’t wait for a full season with this guy.
April 1: So the Cards traded Julio Lugo to the Orioles for a player to be named later. I’m actually OK with this, because they didn’t need him and since he could be a distraction by not playing, it is best to get rid of him now.
March 31: The Cards are really making the Nationals look good this spring. I think more than half of the Nats’ wins are vs. STL. Waino – get your game up!
March 30: Two homers by Holliday. I saw the second one and he literally SMACKED it over the centerfield wall. It was a sweet sound and sweet sight. Even Luddy hit another homer – three straight days!
March 29: Pujols and Ludwick homer for the second straight day, and Jamie Garcia pitches well on the day its announced he would be the fifth starter. These guys are in midseason form! So don’t waste it before the season even starts!
March 28: After four hits yesterday, the Cards had 19 on Sunday! This included a bevvy of homers, including one each from Albert and Luddy. Let’s save some of that for the season boys!
March 27: If you can win a game with only four hits, you have to be happy; that’s what the Cards did Saturday. Bigger deal though, only 8 more days until it all begins!
March 26: Well, the Cards lost to the Nationals again, slowing down their winning streak, but at least Matt Holliday is back and hitting. I really hope Yadi will be back for Opening Day.
March 25: Pujols and Ryan homered, Carp pitched great… LET’S GO BASEBALL SEASON!
March 24: The race for the fifth spot took focus today. Rich Hill started the game but gave up a couple runs in 3 innings, while Kyle McClellan didn’t give up anything in three as well. This would favor McClellan, so maybe this is his chance to start.
March 22: Matt Holliday returned to the Cards lineup – booyah. The Cardinals won both of their split squad games – double booyah.
March 20: Three big things from Saturday: 1) Waino is back to true form, 2) Brendan Ryan is back from wrist surgery, and 3) Cards avenge last week’s walkoff to Mets with Ruben Gotay’s walkoff homer. Kansas basketball lost today, which means Cardinals baseball can’t come any sooner!!!
March 19: I’m getting pretty tired of seeing the Cardinals lose games. I don’t care if its only Spring Training.
March 18: The race for the fifth starting spot is certainly heating up. Rich Hill pitched poorly today, while Jamie Garcia had seven strikeouts in three innings the other day. I don’t want to rush Jamie Garcia into it, but I don’t trust Rich Hill!
March 17: Is the season ready to start, or what?? (Cards had off today, made me eager for the season even more!)
March 16: Cards lost to the Nationals, allowing them to win their first game of the spring. I’m not mad about it, but this better not be a sign of things to come for the regular season.
March 15: I’m starting to think the team should seriously consider Allen Craig to come off the bench as an outfielder. This guy is raking it in Florida and could be an asset in TLR’s system. By the way, the Cards are currently piecing together a rally against the Mets…I’m lovin’ it! ….. Well, I jinxed it, the Cards lost on a wind assisted two-run walkoff homer, haha.
March 14: After being owned by Stephen Strasburg in the first three innings of this game, the Cards scored a bunch of runs to avoid giving the Nationals their first win of the spring. Why do the Cards always have the worst time against young pitchers the first time they face them?? Also, Adam Wainwright isn’t looking too great so far – three weeks til the season starts so pick it up Adam!
